It wouldn't be right to have a website about Red Rover without
including the remaining cast of characters.
In addition to the five dogs, we also have a large number of smaller
animals living here at Red Rover. They're all very used to having
strange dogs around the house...but the reaction of some of the dogs
that stay is priceless! We'll start with The Cat Who Rules All She
Surveys.
Princess Thorn of Barrelhaven-"Thorn"
8 year old long-haired tortoiseshell domestic cat, female-spayed.
Thorn helps out by being a safe cat for dogs to meet. She won't run at
the sight of strange dogs, but usually rubs up on them at first
meeting. She does know how to use her formidable claws, however, if it
seems needed. Thorn visits puppy class occasionally, to teach the
puppies that cats are friends.
"Fry" the new kitten...more news on him later!
Perdita X-"Perdy"
2 year old Siamese sable Netherland dwarf rabbit, female. The bunny
that stayed. She and some other critters were rescued by a friend-her
neighbor was moving and was leaving all the critters that she couldn't
find homes for. They came to me, and Perdy stole my heart, and will be
staying here. She loves to go out on her leash and harness, and makes regular trips to puppy class.
Pippin
4 year old mini lop rabbit, male. Gray and cream colored...very cute.
He is litter box trained, and loves to get out of his cage to run
around. He was rescued with Perdita. He's a lovely little boy, and
hangs out in the house with the dogs quite often.
Beatrix Kiddo and Peyton
2 year old guinea pigs. Beatrix came first, from a pet store-bad
mistake! She's shy and doesn't like to be handled. She is a very
beautiful piggy, with black and orange markings. I adopted Peyton from
the Harford County shelter to be her "boyfriend" (don't tell her that
he's neutered). Peyton is a black piggie with orange markings. He is
much better about being handled. Both are typical piggies...they squeal
when they hear me approach their cage, and are always hungry. The love
to go outside and eat grass in their pen. Peyton also visits puppy
class.
R.I.P.- The Boys-Costello and InBrine
3 year old rattie boys. Sweet and gentle, and very curious. They love
to come out and ride on my shoulders, or run around and play. They were
rescues from a vet student who needed them for a project, and was told
to get rid of them somehow...I adopted them from her. Costello is a
self-black, and InBrine is a self-beige...very handsome. They are both
neutered. The Boys make regular visits to puppy class also. They live
with Rogue, who is one of "The Girls"
R.I.P.-The Girls-Andromeda, Lemon, Miss Moneypenny and Rogue
The first three girls all live together. They are all pet store rats,
and very unfriendly and not tamed. They co-exist with me, they come out
and play when their cage is being cleaned, and run back in when it's
clean. They have a good life, but don't get handled. Andromeda is a
beige, and Lemon and Miss Moneypenny are agoutis. Rogue is a black with
white colored rescued rat, her mom was pet store rat that was pregnant.
The babies ended up in rescue, and I adopted Rogue to live with "The
Boys", since they're neutered, they all get along fine!
Quark & Trillian
1 year old Degus. My first degus happened because of the same woman
that left the rabbits behind. I had seen them before, but never had
one. I took them in so they wouldn't be left behind, and they have
completely charmed me. They were living in a cramped 10 gallon aquarium
with an exercise wheel that was for a mouse (much too small!). I put
them in a new cage, and they got to work trying to breed (guess that
cage was too cramped). So they live separate lives now. They have big cages with exercise wheels that they can fit into...(and that they use constantly)...and lots of levels to hop around on. They
are very charming little creatures, who love to beg for nuts. Never
seen a degu? Well, they look like gerbils on steroids...
And along comes...
Teyla
Another degu, to keep Trillian company. A female buddy, to replace
Quark. She was rescued by Small Angels Rescue based in Frederick, MD.
They went through a lengthy adoption process with me (which was
terrific!)...and I adopted Teyla! I also got a great new cage for the
two girls through Small Angels...so they are living the life of luxury
in their new skyscraper! They are now best of friends...it's wonderful
to see. Now I'm on the lookout for a male to be buddies with Quark, as
they are social creatures!
For more information on adopting a small pet...check out Small Angels
Rescue They're great!
Leela A female dumbo rat rescue...she was supposed to keep Rogue company since her beloved boys got sick and died. Trouble is...they hate each other. So they live their own lives...in their own cages, where they can't hurt each other! She's very timid and prefers to be alone.
Magrat and Pi I really wasn't looking for more rats. Seriously! I went into Petco for some dog treats and a toy. But there was a cage sitting on a table in the front...and I had to go look. I figured it had to be a hamster...but no, it was two female rats. I took them right then and there...they were dropped off at Petco to be adopted out. I reached in and pet them both...friendly, though they didn't come out of their box. Once we got in the car and started traveling...I found that Magrat is actually partially paralyzed in her back end...and drags her legs. After watching her get her legs caught in the wire floor, I bought some purple and pink plastic canvas...and attached it to the floors and ramps. Now she pulls herself around quite easily.
